With great power comes great responsibility. As a Digital Nomad, with great freedom comes (the need for) great discipline. One of the greatest manifestations of our level of discipline (or lack thereof) is in how we spend our time. When you consider the travel time/time zone adjustments, work commitments, the cultivation and maintenance of new relationships and the inevitable exploration of passions and curiosities we develop on the road, it can often feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to sprinkle in the ‘non-essentials’ as they’re foolishly called. (Think exercise, investments in new knowledge, reflections on past travel insights, aka, Self-Love).
It’s no secret that time is a finite resource; energy, however, is a different story. For this reason, Digital Nomads must master their ability to manage their energy. What does this look like? Well like most meaningful and sustainable things, it begins with the mind. That being said, I’ve discovered some AMAZING tools that helped me take my energy mastery to a whole new level; the ASICS Studio™ app!
Physical fitness is key to our emotional health; that being said, leveraging Mindfulness and Meditation is one of the greatest Self Care hacks that can help to keep you sane during life on the road and this is where.
Let’s take a second to dive into these two ideas:
In a tweet, Mindfulness is practicing awareness of “some-thing,” while meditation is practicing the awareness of “no-thing.” A stilling of the mind if you will.
Why are these two words so often seen in tandem? Well, one could argue that practice in one leads to an ease of mastery of the other. When we take time to meditate, even a meditation as simple as taking 3 deep breaths, for the duration of these 3 breaths, we are able to quiet the mind long enough to focus on one specific thing: our breathing.
In practicing meditation, we begin the process of further building the muscle that allows us to more intentionally notice and pay attention to our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and movements, and also to the effects that we have on those around us.
As a Digital Nomad, our ability to practice mindfulness and develop a proactive approach to what we do and why we do it, as opposed to a reactive one that leaves us subject to the external world around us, inevitably impacts every vertical of our life on the road.
Practicing mindfulness can be the difference between making an acquaintance versus making a friend, having a fun night of social drinks versus waking up on the bathroom floor, eating until you’re content versus eating until your nauseous.
At first glance, these examples may seem extreme, but I assure you, they’re not. We make mindless decisions like these every single day and they are holding us back. Our ability to show up and to be fully present in the here in now is what allows us to extract every single bit of value that comes from a life on the road.
Now, you guys know how much I love my technology and all things efficient; since the beginning of 2020, I’ve been trying my hand at using the ASICS Studio app to add some variety and spice into the physical and meditative aspects of my Self Care journey. When my body is fit, I find my mind has the energy to stay present and its had an amazing impact on my ability to perform professionally and personally. I’m so incredibly pleased with my progress so far, I’m excited to offer you a free 7-day trial of the app for you to go in and check it out yourself! Stay Joyful, Be Well, (And let me know what you think!)
